Penny Arcade is the king of webcomics. They’ve been running for about a billion years and have built themselves up quite a large following in the obsessed-about-gaming-movies-popular-culture niche. Hell, is it a niche when it is so fucking big?

Largely focussed on gaming and movie culture, Penny Arcade is brutally funny and sarcastic – both in love with the gaming industry but also tearing through the BS to the delicious centre.

When I say they are the king I really do mean it. They’ve grown from a single strip into a multi-million dollar publishing business, producing games, books, comics and all kinds of cool stuff. Their books are well worth buying – well made and beautiful.

Oh, and take the time to read the posts that accompany the comics. They’re excellent.

PvP started back in 1998 and was one of the first webcomics around.  Over the years it has evolved from a huge focus on computer games, role-playing and fandom to a more general any-topic-is-up-for-humour.

It has its moments of brilliance but like all long-running serials it both lost and gained fans as the creator Scott Kurtz himself changed.

What I most enjoy about this series is that it is a hilarious historical record of nerdom-fandom-geekdom. You see the hope people had for Star Wars Episode 1 … and then the fallout.

It makes fun of the geekier obsessions while being completely serious about them. Here is the first comic.

Housemate is currently playing Assassin’s Creed 2 and Penny Arcade got it right – there is a lot of Italian in this game. I wonder if they’ll ever make a movie out of this? I guess if Prince of Persia goes well …
